I had the chance to visit Sado Island, located about 45 kilometers away from Niigata city. I visited many attractions there, and I think the island would be a great place to visit…. in summer. In cold January, the wind from the sea was freezing and many attractions were closed, unfortunately.
Boarding the ferry from Niigata city. It takes about an hour, and the sea wasn’t so calm so it’s not so good for those with motion sickness !
It was the oyster season, so we got to see big mountains of oyster shells ! Apparently, they use them for various purposes, such as making the roads !
This rock is famous because it looks like a face :
Sado is famous for its Taiko group, Kodo. We visited the Taiko center and met with a member of Kodo and a renowned Taiko teacher. We had the chance to try some Taiko !
There’s a gold mine on Sado Island. We visited an interpretation center and tried to “harvest” our own gold which we could keep as a souvenir.
Sado Island is also famous for its sake. We went to a sake brewery and got to taste the sake that is served on Air France first class ! Also, they have one sake that continuously win the gold medal, so it’s basically the best sake in the world ! I bought a small bottle and I can say that it’s unlike any sake I tasted before. It’s really delicious !
We passed by this impressive pagoda but couldn’t stop, unfortunately.
The sea was beautiful and impressive with a nice blue colors and very strong waves. It seems to be very cold ! I took a short video of the waves.
And off to the hotel ! The room was cozy and warm, and the dinner was amazing ! More in my next post 🙂
