The Biggest Unplanned Party in the World? Halloween in Shibuya

You might have heard about it. Halloween, which used to mean nothing to Japanese people less than 10 years ago, is going through an insane popularity boost in Japan recently. Shibuya, this major shopping and entertainment area with the famous crossing, has literally become a Halloween theater set for an incredible street party. On the 31st, thousands of costumed people invade the streets and this year, the 800 police officers who were there could not do much more than yell and stop people from crossing the streets when the lights were red.

Differences I noticed between here and Halloween back home is that group costumes are THE thing and the whole party consists in taking pictures of each others. No need to say that the selfie stick was quite popular on that night. I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves.
