I’ve been to Kyoto many times and visited almost all the tourist spots (more than once) but for some reason I’ve never went to Ryoan-ji. This buddhist temple is famous for its rock garden, and as I am not really the zen type of person, I wasn’t too interested in this. Still, the fact that there are 15 rocks in the garden and that it is designed so wherever you are you can only see 14, is quite interesting.
What I didn’t know, however, is the amazing surroundings of the temple. To be honest, the rock garden was not the highlight for me, but rather the forest surrounding it. It was so beautiful, lush and green, and with the intermittent rain the atmosphere was even more mysterious. It reminded me of the forests in Miyazaki’s films. I’ll definitely go again if I go back to Kyoto.
Without further ado, here are the pictures.
